Release the Numbers: Show Students What Their Degree Is Really Worth

Decision Maker: Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson

In 2015, the Government started collecting records (called LEO – Longitudinal Education Outcomes) that explicitly connect universities and degrees with average earnings, intended to “enable parents and students to make more informed choices concerning education and employment destinations”.

Despite this apparent aim, successive governments have refused to make the full records public. Instead, they have given access to only a tiny selection of approved researchers, and published only limited, curated data.

This must change. The Government must release the records. They must also compel universities to disclose course-level average earnings, employment rates, non-completion rates and typical lifetime repayments in their marketing. Students and parents should be able to make choices with the full facts.

That is why we are today demanding that the Government releases the full anonymised records. Students, parents and the public should be able to make choices with the full facts. They should know the truth.
